Ask a Designer

Since I started Brightside Prints last summer one of my absolute favorite parts is the group of designers I get to work with. We live from the West Coast to the East Coast and even a Canadian! Most of us have never even met in person, but we communicate almost every day. I love that no matter what the question, one of those designers will probably know the answer. We have many years of combined experience and we all have a passion for design. So now we’re going to share a little of that magic with you with a new feature called “Random designer questions”.

How it works. Email or Facebook message any questions you’d like to ask a designer and we’ll gather the answers together and post them here and our Facebook page. Questions about colors, typography, design programs, illustration, paper, Pinterest, products, stationery, trends… all fair game. If we don’t know the answer in our group, we have partners who are experts in printing, photography, party-planning, home decorating and more. So ask away.

Happy Valentine’s Day

For the past 6 or 7 years my family has sent out Valentine’s Cards instead of Holiday Cards. I get really busy during November and December, so it started out as just a way to procrastinate one thing from my to do list, but has now become a tradition and our friends and family expect a card in February instead of December. This was our design this year. We had a family portrait session taken in Carmel/Monterey California by the super-talented Susanne Ashby.

I was excited about taking photos in this area because it really fits our family perfectly. When the kids have school vacation, we often take a day (or two) trip to the coast. It’s about 2.5 hrs away. Some of our favorite activities include; having a picnic and playing hide and seek at the Dennis the Menace Park, visiting the Monterey Aquarium, playing football on the beach, playing in the waves, and going out for dinner. We’ve have great memories from these little trips. Susanne was patient and got some great shots despite some wind that was blowing our hair all crazy!

Orange Party Part 2

So we had the Orange Party for Natalie and it was a big success!

Decorations: My daughter Ali made tissue paper pom-poms and hung them from the Dining Room chandelier. We used the tutorial from Martha Stewart. Everything else was just our Halloween Decor. Yay for Orange!

Attire: a few days before the party we bought white t-shirts for all the guests and tie-dyed them orange. We bought a tie-dye kit and just used the orange dye. But to me, it looked like reddish orange and white. So we bought some Rit orange dye and soaked the shirts again and I was happy with how they turned out. It was fun to have everyone matching! And a way better “favor” than toys that the parents want to throw away the minute they come home ;)

Food: We had some of Natalie’s favorite orange foods. Nachos, macaroni & cheese, cheese puffs, orange slices, and baby carrots. We made homemade Orange Cream Soda. We usually make Root Beer with dry ice, but we tried it with orange extract and vanilla and it was pretty good – plus everyone loves the dry ice fog billowing over the bubbling concoction. For the cake she wanted cake pops like she saw on a magazine cover in the grocery store. We bought a cake pop maker (thank you 30% off at Kohls!) The kids decorated their own pops with orange frosting and different sprinkles.

Games: We played musical “pillows”, had a mini pumpkin hunt, and searched for the orange marble in a box of rice.

Treats: We bought all of the orange candy we could find from the bins at Win-co and created an orange candy shoppe. The guests filled tin-tie bags with candy and took them home! Whew! That was it!

Maybe this will inspire someone to have a color themed event of their own. Don’t forget to have us create your fabulous invitation!

Custom Birthday Invitations

My daughter’s six year birthday is coming up. She decided to have an “orange” party. Yes, the color orange. It makes sense. She’s in kindergarten and they are learning all of their colors, they spell and sing songs about each color. Luckily in October you can find loads of orange stuff. I found orange lights, plates, napkins, etc. very easily! And the bonus is… anything left over or any decorations can be kept for Halloween. We have some fun orange ideas… orange food, orange attire, and more. I’m so glad I could create the perfect orange invite for her Outrageous Orange Bash. Stay tuned for an upcoming post on all the orange details.

Have a unique party idea? One where you’d never find the perfect invitation? Contact us at Brightside Prints, if we like the idea we’ll create the perfect invitation and the custom design is free for a limited time.
